Sonia Soans will be giving a talk exploring the importance of representation in pop culture:
…this is a relevant issue challenged by feminist, postcolonial and queer disability rightstheorists. At the heart of the argument lies the belief of fair treatment in fiction that has an influence on how individuals who occupy minority status in our society are treated. Mere inclusion is not the focus but a fair ethical of minority characters. Popular media has had spells of inclusion that have done little to further our understanding of minority characters. To do justice to these characters stereotypes must be examined, as should tropes. Representation must then strive go deeper and strive for the realism it hopes to convey.
